Women In History Essay Winner: 1st Place, 7th Grade

Addison Eicher from Butler Catholic earned first place in the YWCA contest with her essay on the first computer programmer and technology pioneer Ada Lovelace.

Ada Lovelace is an important woman in history. She was born in London, England, on December 10, 1815. She died in Marylebone, London, England, on November 27, 1852. Lovelace died at the young age of 36, because of uterine cancer. She was a very smart girl even at a young age. When she was twelve, she decided she wanted to fly. This was in the 1800s mind you, and she was already trying to conceptualize how to invent a "flying machine." Ada was ahead of her time, and she did even more important things for the future of the world.

Lovelace was a very inspirational and intelligent woman. She is not only the first female computer programmer, but the first computer programmer in the history of the world. In 1843, Ada wrote about how a machine could follow a program to calculate numbers. Lovelace had already designed a computer she called the Analytical Engine, and then designed the programs for it The Analytical Engine was never manufactured, but Ada is still credited for creating the first program. The high-level programming language named Ada was named after her.

Ada Lovelace is a great role model for me. Ada inspires me to keep moving toward my goals and never give up. "The more I study, the more insatiable I feel my genius for it to be," said Lovelace. This quote means that the more Ada studied and learned new things, the more she wanted to know. I love to learn new things, especially about computers and math. Ada and I have a lot in common, so it goes without saying that she serves as a role model for me.

Ada Lovelace was a computer programmer, which is a lot like what I want to be in the future. When I'm an adult and get a job, I want to be a programmer for apps, video games, or anything related to computers. It really amazes me that the first computer program was created in the 1800s! When I found Ada Lovelace and saw that she was the first programmer, I thought for sure that the discovery would've been found in the 1900s. Ada's achievements have really had me thinking about what I could do in the future.

Ada Lovelace was a very intelligent, inspirational, and powerful woman. She made history and even changed the future with her ideas and designs. Lovelace is a great role model for many people, including me. Imagine what life would've been like without her discoveries.
